What is Bitcoin? Only one disaster survivor was curious enough to ask about Bitcoin during my journey distributing aid across five areas affected by floods and landslides in Aceh.

Time was limited, which was a real constraint. We all know that understanding Bitcoin is a long journey that can take years.

In Sawang, North Aceh, there was a survivor named Taufiq. He was very enthusiastic about hearing my explanation of Bitcoin. I talked about the history of money, the cruelty of inflation, and how Bitcoin can be a solution.

I repeatedly emphasized that Bitcoin is not a tool for getting rich, but a tool for preserving wealth. No matter how much wealth someone has, what matters is that no one can steal it or debase the value of the hard-earned results of their labor.

I am truly grateful to be able to distribute donation aid from Bitcoiners. The survivors—aside from Taufiq—were also surprised when I told them that the aid I brought came from donations from all over the world.

“The President of Indonesia, Prabowo, may be able to stop foreign aid for disaster victims,” I said, “but no one can stop Bitcoin.”

Distributing donation aid to flood victims in Riseh Teungoh, Riseh Baroh, and Gunci villages in North Aceh Regency.

We brought kitchen supplies such as frying pans and cooking pots, school bags, snacks for children, a power generator, and religious items.

These villages are located in remote areas, about a 40-minute drive from the main national road. Gunci Village is currently still isolated, as the bridge to the village was destroyed by the flood, and residents now use boats to return to their homes.

Riseh Teungoh Village was severely affected by the flood. Most of the densely populated residential area was completely wiped out and replaced by a new river flow.

Riseh Teungoh Village, Sawang Subdistrict, North Aceh Regency, Aceh, Indonesia

The disaster on November 26, 2025, also affected Riseh Teungoh Village. A flash flood struck almost all houses in the village.

Around 90% of the village was impacted by the flood disaster. Public facilities were completely destroyed, 47 houses were swept away by the flood, and the remaining houses were severely damaged. The former residential area has now been replaced by a new river formed after the disaster.
The residents of Riseh Teungoh Village not only lost their homes and belongings, but also lost their land.

Today, 58 days after the disaster, the victims are still living in temporary evacuation tents. The government response has been slow, even though the flood disaster is closely linked to government policies that allowed forest land to be cleared for oil palm plantations by companies. There is no longer a forest ecosystem to absorb rainwater.

My team and I plan to bring kitchen equipment for the displaced families, as they urgently need tools for daily cooking. We will also provide other household necessities so they can begin rebuilding their lives after the disaster.

Plebs, I set aside a small donation from you for a child who is a victim of the flood disaster. Unfortunately, he was involved in a traffic accident while playing with his friend in the small alley in front of his house.

The 2-year-old child is now being treated in intensive care at Meuraxa Hospital, Banda Aceh (the capital of Aceh Province). He has undergone four operations on the left side of his skull, which was torn after being hit by a motorcycle. The perpetrator showed no responsibility after the accident.

The child’s mother, Juliana, explained that her child had the accident while playing with his friend, while Juliana and her husband were cleaning their home that had been submerged in mud after the flood struck their village of Meunasah Trieng, North Aceh (about 6–7 hours from Banda Aceh).

At first, the child was treated at a local hospital in North Aceh before being referred to a better facility in the provincial capital for critical pediatric care.

My team and I from Bitcoin For Humanity stopped by to talk with Juliana when we delivered a small amount of aid in the form of baby formula and diapers for the child. We also purchased rice, drinking water, and some instant noodles to support the parents’ food needs while staying at the hospital.

Before leaving the hospital, I also gave cash to Juliana so she would have money to buy necessities while staying there. She doesn’t have a home to return to in the capital, and her husband is just a regular farmer with limited means.

Before the disaster struck, Kelitu Sintep Village was well known for producing high-quality avocados. The fruits were large, with thick flesh and great taste.

Sadly, the landslide destroyed dozens of hectares of avocado plantations owned by farmers in Kelitu Sintep. They now have to start planting again from scratch.

My team and I from Bitcoin for Humanity were given avocados as a gift by the landslide survivors, as a few of the plantations were still spared from the disaster.

Trauma Healing for Disaster-Affected Children in Kelitu Sintep

In Kelitu Sintep Village, Central Aceh, after delivering the donations, we invited the children to take part in fun challenge games, where they came forward and showed their skills. The activities continued with a movie screening about the environment titled “The Forest Guardians.”

After the movie, the children answered questions about the characters and the story. Those who answered correctly received snacks as rewards.

At the end of the trauma healing session, all children received snacks and school bags containing notebooks, drawing books, colored pencils, and pens. We hope they can recover from the trauma of the disaster and regain their enthusiasm for learning at school.

Notes:

Blang Rakal Village was not originally included in the distribution plan. However, during our journey, we coincidentally met a village official from Blang Rakal who informed us about six disaster survivors whose homes near the river were completely destroyed by flooding. We then purchased and delivered basic food supplies for them.

In Kelitu Sintep and Uning Mas, we also distributed ready-to-eat meals (traditional Acehnese food). These food purchases were not funded by Bitcoiners’ donations, but were entrusted by other donors. We collaborated in distributing them together to the victims.

Additional basic food supplies were also delivered to friends who are disaster victims living in Bener Meriah and Takengon. We managed to visit some of their homes, though not all. There were about five people in total, each receiving one bag of rice and one tray of eggs. For those we could not visit, the supplies were left at a designated pickup location.

After delivering aid to Kelitu Sintep Village in Central Aceh, the next day—Sunday, January 11, 2026—we continued to Uning Mas Village in Bener Meriah (a neighboring regency of Central Aceh). In Uning Mas, we distributed the same type of assistance as in Sintep: rice cooking pots, frying pans, blankets, and prayer mats.

“That’s exactly what we really need right now,” said one of the women affected by the landslide in Uning Mas. Earlier, I approached them at the evacuation site and told them that I had brought some assistance in the form of kitchen supplies.

Uning Mas was also affected by a disaster on November 27, 2025—not flooding, but a severe landslide.

The village, located at the foot of a hill, was hit by a massive landslide unlike anything they had experienced before. As a result, 49 houses were completely destroyed. Residents only had time to save themselves, without being able to bring anything. One person lost their life.

“We have to rebuild our lives from zero again. Our homes are gone, and our farmland has been destroyed,” said a man I spoke with about their situation after the disaster.

Uning Mas is a remote highland village built along hilly slopes. Traveling to Uning Mas requires extra caution. Along the way, we encountered many road sections that had previously been buried by landslides, as well as collapsed bridges. The residents later built temporary bridges so that aid could still be accessed by four-wheeled vehicles.

Some residents of Uning Mas who no longer have homes are now living in government-provided evacuation tents, while others are staying with relatives.

We did not have much time to talk with them. Our arrival was close to nightfall, and the difficult road access—unfriendly for four-wheeled vehicles due to landslide debris in several spots—combined with overcast weather, forced us to return shortly after delivering the aid.
